Fragrance Families: Floral, Woody, Amber and Fresh Perfumes

Fragrance families help organize the enormous number of perfumes available. They are not a rigid system because many compositions combine several directions, but they make preferences easier to describe. Knowing your favorite family can greatly speed up the search for a new scent.

Floral perfumes feature ingredients such as rose, jasmine, tuberose, violet and iris. Fresh compositions include citrus, green, aquatic and aromatic notes. They can feel light and energetic, although their character depends on the other ingredients around them.

The woody family uses cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli and other accords associated with dry or creamy woods. Oriental fragrances, also called amber fragrances, often contain resins, spices, vanilla and balsams. Other popular categories include gourmand, chypre and leather compositions.

In practice, look at combinations such as floral-woody, citrus-aromatic or amber-vanilla. These labels often describe the full character of a perfume more accurately. Comparing several fragrances from one family helps reveal which specific notes and proportions suit you best.
